LETTER TO THE EDITOR.

WE ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

Dear Editor,

It is sad to see the state of our open drains and the stench they emanate especially the ones in the capital city,Accra. When one takes a stroll throughout the city of accra, one will notice the accumulation of excessive plastic waste instead of water in this drains and the sad thing is that,we ghanianans dump this plastic, rubber and metal waste in those drains.

Last year,Accra experienced severe flooding in many of it suburbs such as the Kwame Nkrumah cirle which destroyed a sizeable number of valuable properties and also claimed precious lives. The death of A student of ghana institute of management and public administration (GIMPA) brought me a mixed feeling of sorrow and anger because of the fact that our drains which is supposed to serve as their purpose during the raining season have been turned into rubbish dumps;blocking the free flow of water and causing unmaniginable flooding especially when there are heavy rains.

Worst of all Mister Editor, is the the non-functioning and ineffective bye laws of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA),The authorities responsible  for enforcing these bye laws have failed to the extent that the Odor river in circle and the korle lagoon;once clean and productive water bodies are now "dead" due to the unreasonable attitude of some irresponsible ghanaians .It is very true that the mayor of accra Mr. Alfred Oko Vanderpiuje,Accra Metropolitan Assembly and zoomlion ghana limited are doing their very best but their efforts are failing due to the wicked attitudes exhibited by some ghanaians and until these attitudes are changed,Accra will continue to be a filth ridden city.

It is high time accra metropoiltan assembly rigidly enforce its bye laws concerning waste disposal and culprits punished in order to ensure sanity in the city and prevent occasional cholera outbreaks, high rate of malaria and the frequent flooding in accra.
